Every product works in mild conditions. That's not an endorsement. That's an indictment.
The product roundups, the comparison articles, the Reddit threads — they were mostly written by people who tested in spring. Moderate temps. Low humidity. A two-hour run on a dry morning. Under those conditions almost anything works, and almost nothing fails spectacularly enough to matter.
The Southeast in summer is not those conditions.
The Southeast in summer is a specific, compounding, accelerating set of variables that expose every product's failure mode within the first half of a long effort. The runners who've been through it know. The runners who haven't yet are going to learn — the question is whether they learn it on a training run or at mile 50 of something that matters.
This article is about why the products fail here specifically — the science behind it, the conditions that drive it, and what actually holds when everything else doesn't. The standard advice — apply before you run, reapply if needed — is not wrong. It's incomplete. In the Southeast, in summer, the protocol needs to account for the specific failure modes above.
Apply to dry skin, 15–30 minutes before start. Not in the car. Not at the start line. The product needs time to set before movement — and in humid conditions, any sweat during warmup degrades adhesion before you've taken a step.
Wipe before reapplying. Salt accumulation on the skin surface increases friction even under fresh product. A body wipe or clean cloth over the application zone before reapplication removes the salt layer — not just adds more balm on top of the problem.

After any significant water crossing: reapply. A creek crossing or rain event resets your protection window. Plan for it before the race, not during.
